Mark's noteFrom the teacher behind Tools for Educators and MES English

With the large clothing flashcards on MES English, there are seven characters wearing all of the items from the set. They're great for teaching "He's wearing..." or "She has on..."

Clothes is also where I first get students to use the negative: "I'm not wearing a blue coat." They'll have heard it before, but this is where I put the emphasis on it.

Useful phrases for Clothing

Pair the vocabulary with one sentence pattern at a time. Each level builds on the one before.

  • Put on your hat. Take off your shoes.

Next step

  • I'm not wearing a coat today.
  • It's cold. Put on your gloves.

  • He was wearing a red sweater this morning.

Teaching tips for Clothing

Use what students are wearing

The best flashcards are already in the room. "Who's wearing a white shirt? Stand up!" turns the vocabulary into a quick, active game.

Watch the pairs

Pants, shorts, jeans and pajamas are always plural, even though they're one item. Socks, shoes and gloves come in pairs. It's worth pointing out once students know the words.

Add color

Clothing and colors work perfectly together: "a red hat," "blue jeans." It doubles the practice and makes descriptions more interesting.

Connect to the weather

"It's cold. Wear a coat." "It's hot. Wear shorts." Pairing clothes with weather gives students a real reason to use the words.

Clothing lesson ideas

Dress the paper doll

Students draw and color clothes on a simple figure, then describe it to a partner who has to draw the same outfit without looking.

Who is it?

One student describes a classmate's clothes: "She's wearing a green sweater and black shoes." Everyone else guesses who it is.

Packing for a trip

Name a place and a season. Students choose five items to pack and explain why: "It's cold, so I need gloves."

A clothing week

Flashcards and the vocabulary sheet on day 1, word search on day 2, the Who is it? game on day 3, then bingo or the board game to finish.
