Hobbies Worksheets

Baking, flying a kite, doing puzzles and taking pictures. Hobbies give students the words to talk about what they enjoy, and they lead naturally into likes, routines and getting to know each other. Pick a worksheet below and it is ready to print in one click, using the 20 words shown.

Mark's noteFrom the teacher behind Tools for Educators and MES English

My first hobbies set is for younger students, and the second is for upper elementary through teens. I recommend choosing one or the other for your group's age rather than going through them in order. This list mixes both, so use Edit this list to fit your students.

Both sets are great for "What do you do in your free time?" and "What do you like to do?" They're also a very natural way into the present simple; I don't need to explain the grammar with these cards. With older students and adults, they're perfect for "used to": "I used to play video games, but now I'm too busy."

Useful phrases for Hobbies

Pair the vocabulary with one sentence pattern at a time. Each level builds on the one before.

Teaching tips for Hobbies

Match the list to the age

Younger children and teens have very different hobbies. Take a minute with Edit this list to keep the activities your students actually do.

Let the cards teach the grammar

"I paint pictures." "She plays cards." Hobbies are things we do regularly, so the present simple feels natural without much explanation.

Add frequency

Always, sometimes and never fit hobbies perfectly, and they give students more to say than a simple yes or no.

Sports are separate

This set leaves out sports on purpose. If your students love sports, the Sports page has its own word list.

Hobbies lesson ideas

Find someone who

Give students a grid of hobbies. They walk around asking "Do you like to ___?" until they find a classmate for each box.

Hobby presentation

Each student brings in or draws something related to a hobby and gives a short talk: "This is my kite. I fly it on weekends."

Used to, now

For older students: draw two columns, "when I was little" and "now," and fill them with hobbies. Then share: "I used to play with dolls. Now I bake."

A hobbies week

Flashcards and the vocabulary sheet on day 1, word search on day 2, find someone who on day 3, then bingo or the board game to finish.
