Mark's noteFrom the teacher behind Tools for Educators and MES English

I teach this set very early on, then use it again much later to work on take, ride, drive and fly for how we get places: "How do you go to school?" "I fly a rocket to school."

Teaching tips for Transportation

Sort land, sea and air

Sort the cards into three groups: on the road, on the water, in the sky. It's a quick review and a natural way to talk about each vehicle.

Teach take, ride, drive and fly

We take a bus, ride a bike, drive a car and fly a plane. Grouping the vehicles by verb makes "How do you go to school?" much easier to answer.

Notice "a" and "an"

An airplane, an ambulance, a bus. Transportation is a natural place to practice when we say "an."

Have fun with the silly ones

The UFO, rocket and submarine invite creative answers. "I go to school by UFO" keeps young students laughing and talking.

Transportation lesson ideas

How do you get here?

Students ask classmates "How do you go to school?" and make a class graph: walk, bike, bus, car. Which is most common?

Sound and guess

Make the sound of a vehicle (a siren, a train horn, a helicopter) and students guess which card it is.

Dream trip

Students plan a trip using three kinds of transportation: "First I take a taxi to the airport. Then I fly to the beach. Then I ride a boat."

A transportation week

Flashcards and the land, sea and air sort on day 1, word search on day 2, the class graph on day 3, then bingo or the board game to finish.
