Mark's noteFrom the teacher behind Tools for Educators and MES English

I teach "Happy Valentine's Day" as an extra phrase rather than one of the main game words, so it's easy to leave out of bingo if you prefer.

For spelling practice, try Fix the Hearts on MES English: students connect broken hearts to make Valentine's words, then write the words out.

Teaching tips for Valentines Day

Keep it friendly

For young learners, frame Valentine's Day as a day to say thank you to friends and family. Cards for a classmate, a parent or a teacher keep the focus on kindness.

Use the opinion words

Popular, embarrassing and disgusting are in the set, and they're useful far beyond February. Ask "Is it embarrassing?" about different situations and let students give their opinion.

Compare customs

Valentine's Day is celebrated differently around the world. In some countries, women give chocolate to men, and there's a second day a month later. Comparing customs makes an interesting discussion for older students.

Mind the long phrases

"Send a valentine" and "box of chocolates" are longer answers. For a small word search grid, edit the list down to the shorter words.

Valentines Day lesson and party ideas

Valentine card exchange

Students write a short card to a classmate using a frame: "Dear ___, Happy Valentine's Day! You are ___." Collect and deliver them at the end of class.

Valentine's bingo party

Play 3x3 picture bingo. Candy hearts make perfect markers, and the winner reads their three words aloud.

Fix the Hearts

Cut paper hearts in half with a word part on each side. Students find the matching halves to build Valentine's words, then write them.

A Valentine's week

Flashcards and the vocabulary sheet on day 1, word search on day 2, crossword on day 3, then a card exchange or bingo party on Valentine's Day.
