Mark's noteFrom the teacher behind Tools for Educators and MES English

Weather is short and sweet. I cover the vocabulary and "How's the weather?" and don't spend a lot of time on it. Then I bring it back now and then for review. It's very useful vocabulary.

Later on, weather is a good set for working with past, present and future together: what the weather was like yesterday, what it's like today, and what it's going to be like tomorrow.

Useful phrases for Weather

Pair the vocabulary with one sentence pattern at a time. Each level builds on the one before.

Starting out

First lessons, once students know the words
  • How's the weather? It's sunny.
  • Is it cold today? Yes. / No.
  • It's raining. It's windy.

Next step

Building on the basics
  • It's cold. Wear a coat.
  • Yesterday it was rainy.
  • Tomorrow it's going to snow.

Challenge

For older or more advanced students
  • Here's today's weather report: ___.
  • When it's rainy, I ___.
  • If it's sunny tomorrow, we'll ___.

Teaching tips for Weather

Make it a daily routine

Ask "How's the weather?" at the start of every class and have a student look out the window and answer. It takes 30 seconds and the words stick for good.

Notice the -y pattern

Sun becomes sunny, cloud becomes cloudy, wind becomes windy. Once students see the pattern, they can often work out new weather words on their own.

Line up the temperatures

Hot, warm, cool, cold. Put the cards in order on the board to show the scale. It's clearer than teaching the four words separately.

Connect to clothes

"It's cold. Put on your gloves." Weather and clothing work so well together that it's worth teaching them back to back.

Weather lesson ideas

Class weather chart

Keep a weather chart on the wall for a week or a month. A different student updates it each day, and at the end you count: "How many sunny days?"

Weather reporter

Students take turns presenting the weather like a TV reporter, with a map and the flashcards: "Today it's sunny and hot."

What should I wear?

Show a weather card and students choose clothes cards to match, explaining why: "It's snowy, so I need boots."

A weather week

Flashcards and the vocabulary sheet on day 1, word search on day 2, weather reporter on day 3, then bingo or the board game to finish.
